Student Direct Stream (SDS) Program for Faster Study Permits

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) program has revolutionized the visa application process for international students aspiring to study in Canada. Introduced by Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada, SDS aims to streamline and expedite visa processing, making it more efficient and convenient. This article delves into the key differences between SDS and Non-SDS visa applications, highlighting the benefits of choosing SDS for a smoother visa experience.

What is SDS?

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) program was launched by Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada to fast-track the visa process for international students. Under SDS, eligible applicants can receive their visas within 4-6 weeks, with most applications completed within 20 days. This program has significantly reduced processing times and made the visa application process more efficient.

What is Non-SDS?

Non-SDS refers to the general visa process for studying, working, and living in Canada. Unlike SDS, which is designed to expedite visa processing for select countries, Non-SDS applies to all countries and is a lengthier process with more extensive documentation requirements.

Difference between SDS and Non-SDS visa applications

  • Visa Processing Time: SDS applications are processed much faster, typically within 20 calendar days, compared to 6-8 weeks for Non-SDS applications.
  • Eligibility: SDS is applicable to select countries, including Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Vietnam. Non-SDS applies to all countries.
  • Documentation: SDS requires less documentation compared to Non-SDS, which has more extensive requirements.
  • Process: The SDS process is streamlined and efficient, while Non-SDS can be lengthy and confusing at times.
  • Medium: SDS applications are only accepted online, while Non-SDS applications can be submitted offline as well.
  • Success Rate: SDS applications have a higher success rate of 71%, compared to 40% for Non-SDS applications.

Language Scores Accepted for SDS Visa Applications

For SDS visa applications, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada accepts additional English language tests, including IELTS Academic, CAEL, TOEFL iBT, and PTE. The minimum overall band score required for IELTS Academic is 6.0, while for PTE, it is 60.

Documents Required for SDS Visa Application

The following documents are required for SDS visa application:

  • Acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
  • Proof of payment for your first year of tuition fees
  • Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) payment certificate or attestation letter
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Test Report Form (TRF) or Test d’evaluation de francais (TEF) scorecard
  • Medical examination report from an authorized panel of physicians
  • Comprehensive academic background and records
  • Additional requirement of a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) for students studying in Quebec.

In conclusion, the Student Direct Stream (SDS) program offers a faster and more efficient visa application process for international students applying to study in Canada. By understanding the differences between SDS and Non-SDS visa applications, students can make informed decisions and choose the best option for their study abroad journey.
