Europe is increasingly becoming a popular destination for Indian students seeking higher education opportunities. According to Tomasz Kozlowski, the European Union ambassador to India, close to 50,000 Indian students are currently studying in the EU, making Europe the second most sought-after destination for Indian students.
One of the key reasons for this trend is the presence of a large number of higher educational institutions in Europe. The continent boasts 4,000 higher educational institutions, which account for 20% of all global universities. With a student population of 20 million and 1.5 million teaching staff, Europe offers a diverse and enriching academic environment. Additionally, more than 12,500 undergraduate programs are taught in English in the EU, making it an attractive option for Indian students looking to pursue their studies in English.
Despite concerns about Brexit affecting scholarships for Indian students, Kozlowski reassures that there would not be an immediate impact on scholarships offered by EU education institutions to Indian students. In fact, the EU has been actively supporting Indian students through various scholarship programs. Over 4,000 Indian students have benefited from Erasmus grants in recent years, while around 1,700 grants have been awarded to Indian research scholars under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Scholarships.
While Britain has traditionally been the most preferred destination for Indian students, there is a growing interest in other European countries among Indian students. Countries such as France, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, and Denmark are increasingly attracting Indian students due to their high-quality education systems and diverse cultural experiences.
The EU has also supported the establishment of EU/India study centers, financing 15 projects that have benefited universities in both India and Europe. This collaboration aims to enhance academic cooperation and promote student exchange between the two regions.
Looking ahead, the EU is set to collaborate with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) for its upcoming Higher Education Summit. This partnership highlights the EU’s commitment to promoting higher education and academic exchange between India and Europe.
